William Tyndale Translated the Bible to English
The story of the Tyndale Bible translation is not a pretty one, but it is one of the most impactful moments in Christian history.
We shouldn’t take for granted that dusty Bible sitting on the shelf. We tell ourselves, I’ll open it tomorrow, but tomorrow becomes today, and today becomes never. We get busy. We get distracted. We fill our minds with lesser things that satisfy temporary cravings while leaving our souls wanting more.
There was a time when you and I could not open that sacred text even if we tried.
Traveling back to that time brings us to cobblestone roads, foggy air, and candlelit rooms. It introduces us to William Tyndale, the man behind the historic Tyndale Bible translation that made Scripture accessible to everyday people.
The Bible was Exclusively Accessible in Latin
Before the Tyndale Bible translation, Scripture was locked away in Latin.
Only trained clergy could read it. Only church leaders could interpret it. They claimed the Bible was too complex for “common” people, but behind that belief was something deeper: control.
Whoever controlled Scripture controlled society.
Tyndale saw this clearly and he refused to accept it.

Tyndale believed God’s Word was living and transformative. He believed every person deserved direct access to it in their own language.
Though he came from humble beginnings, he received an excellent education. As a young man, he worked as a tutor in a wealthy household, where he often debated influential clergy and scholars.
During one dinner, a guest dismissed him, saying, “Why should we listen to a mere tutor?”
In that moment, Tyndale realized truth no longer mattered to them. Power did.
That realization strengthened his commitment to the Tyndale Bible translation.
Tyndale Knowingly Risked his Life to Translate the Bible to English
Determined to act, Tyndale began translating Scripture directly from Greek and Hebrew into English.
England refused to allow this work.
So he fled.
He traveled through Germany and the Low Countries, secretly printing English Bibles and smuggling them back into England through merchants and trade routes.
Authorities hunted him. They burned his books. They banned his work.
Yet people kept buying them.
Every fire only spread the hunger for truth and increased interest in the Tyndale Bible translation.
Tyndale’s Sacrifice
Imagine living in hiding.
Imagine knowing every day could be your last.
Imagine watching your life’s work burned in public and continuing anyway.
That was Tyndale’s reality.
He didn’t seek fame. He didn’t seek recognition. He sought obedience.
His mission mattered more than his safety.
England Burned Tyndale’s English Bibles
Church leaders once bought large batches of English Bibles with one goal: to destroy them.
They publicly burned them.
Ironically, Tyndale used their money to print more.
Their fires ignited faith.
What was meant to silence the Tyndale Bible translation only amplified its impact.
Tyndale Was Betrayed
Eventually, betrayal found him.
An Englishman named Henry Phillips pretended to be his friend, then turned him in for money.
Tyndale was imprisoned for over a year.
In 1536, he was executed for heresy.
His final prayer was:
“Lord, open the King of England’s eyes.”
A few years later, English Bibles based on his work were officially approved.
His prayer was answered.
Tyndale Changed the World Forever
Because of the Tyndale Bible translation, millions of people can now read Scripture for themselves.
His work became the foundation for future translations, including the King James Version.
He lived fearless.
He lived obedient.
He lived free.
And his legacy still shapes faith today.
