About Taylor Chapters

The intersection of North and South America through the eyes of an American Freelance Journalist.

Professionally I have worked as a journalist and a communications manager, telling stories for communities and corporations. Behind the scenes in my own personal life I have always been a writer and a creative at heart that has lived a lifelong dance between American and Hispanic culture.

On one hand I was a suburban Houston girl with family out in the country that I adored. I felt most at home running barefoot through the country side, jumping in ponds, and riding on the backs of horses in the summer heat. Back in the suburbs I consistently kept making friends with hispanic kids and even went to a fully hispanic church where my family was one of the only English speaking families. At the time I didn’t think much of it, but it was planting some deeply rooted seeds of love for hispanic culture.

Next, I moved to Missouri for school and attended a college made up of 70% international students, the majority being from South America. I quickly made friends and they showed me their culture, their food, and their kindness. During a very difficult time in my life they filled my ears with reggaeton and laughter and taught me to dance, and eventually started to teach me their language, too. That led to me minoring in Spanish and falling very in love with learning the language. It was so energizing and challenging, and I had an amazing professor.

After college I felt inspired by the bravery of my international friends and wanted to have an international journey of my own. The goal? To become fluent in Spanish and to experience the world in a different way. I moved to Spain and taught English there for two years. I became immersed in the language and culture and I really learned who I was and that I was capable of figuring things out no matter where life took me. It bred a confidence I hadn’t previously had. I also met amazing people, travelled constantly, and found so much joy that I will always carry with me.

After Spain I went to live with my family out in the country and felt so reconnected with my Texas roots. We fished, we ate barbecue and fried fresh caught catfish and again I felt an unexplainable joy that becomes engrained into a piece of who you are that grounds you deeply no matter where you end up.

Fast forward and I moved to Miami to chase my professional dreams and to live by the ocean and to continue being able to practice the Spanish I had fought hard to learn. I met and fell in love with a Peruvian who is now my fiance and we travel to Peru frequently, with plans to explore other parts of South America, too.

Today, I film my intercultural experiences and share them through videos and blog posts. My goal now is to shine a spotlight on the people and experiences that continue to shape me and make me feel so alive. Some moments are serious, some are filled with laughter, some are all about food and some are about cultural points of difference. At Taylor Chapters, we explore it all with curiosity, grounded in where we came from but open to places we have never seen.
